CHECKING IN: Sound View Greenport

Let’s check in and check out this breezy, waterfront, salt-air-soaked North Fork retreat, shall we?

THE WHERE:

Greenport, NY

THE WHAT:

Perched right on the Long Island Sound, Sound View Greenport is the kind of place that reminds you why people fell in love with the North Fork in the first place. Every room faces the water, the beach is steps away and the mood is refreshingly unfussy. It's relaxed without feeling sleepy, stylish without trying to be a scene and just far enough from the city to convince your brain it's actually on vacation.

THE WHEN:

Summer is the obvious choice, when beach days, rosé and sunset cocktails become a perfectly acceptable daily routine. Early fall might be even better. The vineyards are buzzing with harvest season, the crowds begin to thin and the weather is still warm enough to spend the afternoon by the water. Spring is quieter and full of fresh energy, while winter offers a slower, cozier version of the North Fork that feels like you've stumbled upon a local secret.

The YUM:

The hotel's restaurant, The Halyard, fully embraces its waterfront setting with seafood-forward menus and sweeping views across the Sound. Arrive before sunset if you can. Even a simple lunch somehow feels elevated when you're watching boats drift by, with a Mattituck Mushroom Toast, Shinnecock Skate Schnitzel or the classic Lobster Roll.

Whet Your Whistle: Go for a local rosé from one of the surrounding vineyards, or try the 'Never Wrong ' with Lillet Blanc, ginger liqueur, basil, blood orange, lemon bitters and prosecco.

The WHY?:

Because the North Fork still feels like Long Island's local and chicly authentic hotspot. Sound View captures everything that makes this corner of New York so appealing: waterfront sunsets, excellent wineries, fresh seafood and an easygoing pace that encourages you to linger a little longer. It's the kind of weekend where your biggest decision is whether to head to another vineyard...or simply order another drink and stay exactly where you are.
