Citrus Salad with Five Spice Honey

I love citrus of all kinds, and will take any opportunity to feature it on my dining table. It’s sunshine in your mouth. This dish comes together in minutes and really pumps up the volume with the addition of five spice honey and ricotta. You can find Five Spice powder in your local grocery store, or you can easily make your own. Combine star anise, cinnamon, fennel seed, Szechuan peppercorns and cloves in a spice grinder until smooth.

For a savory take swap out the mint and add parsley, kalamata olives and thinly sliced red onion.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

1 large grapefruit
1-2 oranges
1-2 blood oranges
¼ cup honey
1 tsp five spice
1 cup whole milk ricotta
Very good Extra Virgin olive oil
Pistachios for garnish, roughly chopped
Mint leaves, for garnish
Fleur de sel

METHOD

With a sharp knife, peel all citrus and cut into ¼“ rounds, breaking in half any larger rounds like the grapefruit.

In a small heatproof measuring cup, combine honey and five spice, stirring to combine. Microwave for 15 seconds to thin out slightly.

Swirl ricotta in an even layer on a serving platter, then layer citrus slices atop (alternately, you can arrange the citrus slices on the platter and add dollops of ricotta atop). Drizzle with five spice honey, then garnish with pistachios and mint leaves. Finish with olive oil and fleur de sel, and serve.
